The Urban Arts Educators Academy intends to ensure educators working in environments impacted by urban culture and who are teaching the arts are delivering high quality experiences to students that are relevant, meaningful, hands-on, and enhance learning in all areas.
UAEA participants are given an in-depth training opportunity in arts, education, and urban education specifically. UAEA provides ongoing training and a network of artists, educators, leaders, teaching artists and practitioners to share and test ideas, theories and practices.
The Need
The vision for UAEA emerged from discussions with leaders and educators who experienced challenges teaching this new generation of students who are very much influenced by what they see on social media, television and among their peers. Many of these educators and artists lacked understanding of this impact on the school culture and students’ attitudes, behaviors and speech. With the support of veterans and experts in this field, UAEA brings together many from different disciplines and levels of experience with one common goal: creating an enriching experience for students that honors who they are, embraces their individuality, and inspires them to create.
UAEA familiarizes participants with the Maryland State Curriculum (SC) in the fine arts and other academic areas, as well as the National Core Arts Standards. UAEA training staff will help participants to bridge gaps between their students, pedagogies and art forms, while teaching them how to create lessons and experiences that are engaging, enriching and transformative.
