Our goal in LTYC Teachers of Tomorrow is to nurture students’ desire to teach and inspire the next generation of artists, teachers, and leaders.

We will help students to identify the different aspects involved in being an Arts Educator. Through a series of training and workshops, students will learn classroom management skills, how to create a lesson plan, and how to apply effective teaching strategies in fine arts classrooms.

The Details

  • Perception: 54% of Americans don’t want their own children to become teachers

  • Matriculation: 35% drop in teacher prep programs enrollments since 2009

  • Representation: 81.9% of the teacher workforce is white while 52.5% of the student population is children of color

  • Specialization: As of September 2016 Art and Dance are both critical shortage areas and Theatre and Music are considered shortage areas. Out of the 2,759 individuals who completed college or university programs in education programs in Maryland, only 165 completed a program in an art content area.

  • Retention: Between 19 and 30% of new teachers leave the profession within the first five years, with turnover much higher in low-income schools.
